The other day Lowery and I were playing catch. He told me that he wasn’t good at quarterback. I responded with “What! Who told you that?”
As a parent, you want your kids to dream, to try all sorts of things. I want my kids to recognize their value is not dependent on success or failure, but on their position as my child. I love Lowery because he is Lowery, my son. If he wants to throw a ball, he can! So again I frantically asked, “Who told you that?”
My instinct was to wipe out his negative idea with truth. “Son, listen to me… I really know you, what you can and can’t do; I know what you want and what you need. Trust me, you can throw, plus we can practice. I will show you how to throw, what to say, and how to think about passing the ball. Lets do it, you have a good dream and I am here to help.”
Reminded me of a conversation in the beginning of the Bible between God and Adam. In Genesis 3:10-11, Adam answered, “I heard you in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” And God said, “Who told you that you were naked?”
Just thinking about the voices that we choose to listen to.
Today I hear God saying that we not only have good dreams, but a faithful father.
