Jesus isn’t fire insurance!
I heard this phrase in the church while growing up.
Mostly grown up now, and I see what the church was trying to say.
“You can’t just say you believe in Jesus and continue in your unethical ways.”
Sure you can, that’s the good news.
But that seems cheap and wrong.
I realize now, the issue isn’t about the nature of the good news, God really does forgive you. The issue is our definition of heaven.
I found a great passage where Jesus not only describes eternal life, but prays that his followers would get it.
John 17:3 Now this is eternal life: that they (the followers of Christ) may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
Jesus is praying that we really get to know the source of life, love him, enjoy him, cry with him, long to be with him physically, learn to trust our lives with him. Essentially describing a committed relationship. Heaven is just the wedding day when Jesus carries us over the threshold of our new home. Life together, forever.
Does that sound good to you?
The more you get to know him, the better that sounds.
