I took Lowery to an Orlando City Soccer Game on Sunday night. On the way there he hoped that it would not be a 0-0 game, because that would be boring. Uh oh! I love soccer and am really sensitive to the “Soccer is boring bug”. After pushing through the fear that I had already lost him, I found myself explaining the “build up”.
Building up to every goal is a series of split second decisions, precise skill, and an unspoken consciousness among teammates. It’s beautiful.
Imagine Van Gogh, Bach and Shakespeare collaborating on a Nick Cage movie . . . (take a second, that was profound) The point is . . . real soccer fans always want to see the build up. We even enjoy watching failed build ups. In fact, most of the game is a series of failed build ups.
I think this is why God enjoys living with us, he just really likes all that goes into the build ups. Where others see boredom, failure and loss God see’s a life that is building up to something beautiful.
Reminded me of this verse in Philippians 1,
“6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
